Roz McCall MSP has today made a speech in the Scottish Parliament in support of foster carers in the workplace and the crucial fostering friendly employer’s scheme. This follows working alongside the fostering network and others to raise the profile of foster carers in Scotland.
In her speech, Ms McCall raised the shocking statistic that a quarter of child protection orders are for children under 20 days old. Roz McCall MSP also applauded the efforts of charity groups such as Waves Trust and the NSPCC in raising the plight of vulnerable children and drawing attention to Scotland’s baby blind spot. Ms McCall also drew attention to the fantastic 70/30 initiative which works towards a 70% reduction to the levels of children who experience maltreatment.
Roz McCall MSP also raised the issue that Scotland is the only area in the United Kingdom not to have a minimum carers allowance and Ms McCall also repeated her concern that there is still not enough support for adopted children and their parents.
Roz McCall MSP said:
“Why are the most vulnerable children and young people in our society and the people who look after them not valued?”
“All children who live with a family member, an adopter or a foster family have experienced the same levels of trauma and uncertainties in their early life. So, it goes without saying that all these families would benefit from more understanding in the workplace.”
“We must ensure that, regardless of the care provider, the benefits are accessible, if we truly want a system that puts the welfare of the child at its heart.”
