Roz McCall MSP has met with a group of volunteers who aim to help the Coastguards and Lifeguards keep people safe on West Fife’s Coastline.
Coastwatch West Fife was set up by volunteers and is based at Silver Sands, Aberdour, and their aim is to watch the coast and inform the relevant authorities of any issues.
The group also do a lot to support the community, such as supporting schools in their Duke of Edinburgh awards and offering work experience for students. They also look after the safety ropes at the beaches on Aberdour.
Ms McCall is supporting the group in attempting to get funding from the Fife Environmental Trust as she believes it is vital that we support groups such as West Fife Coastwatch. The group is looking for £10,000 to help them continue doing the work they do.
The group are looking to build a small office to enable them to perform their tasks better and ensure they have the room they need all year round.
Ms McCall has supported the group in gaining funding and hopes they will keep delivering the vital service to West Fife communities.
Roz McCall MSP, (Mid-Scotland and Fife) said:
“Coastwatch West Fife is an amazing group doing a lot for coastal communities in West Fife, and they are looking to do more soon.
“The group deserves more support and has done a lot for the local community. Their work with local schools.
“Our coastlines are an important asset and help attract tourists and businesses. However, they are also a place for leisure for many in Fife.
“It is important we support organisations like Coastwatch West Fife and ensure our coast is as safe as possible for tourists and locals alike.”
Coastwatch West Fife said:
“As a group, we have been going from strength to strength. We have recently just fundraised £450 and have been able to start offering first aid and CPR to the community.
“We have a VHR radio and other equipment which is worth around £10,000. This allows us to track ships, perform first aid, and perform CPR if needed.
“We also do a lot of the maintenance to safety equipment across the Silver Sand beach, such as checking the life rings.
“As a group, we organise opportunities that young people can use towards their Duke of Edinburgh award.
“We are an organisation looking to set up a new office on Silver Sands Beach in Aberdour. This will allow us to store all our equipment safely, and we will be able to perform our duties more effectively.”
