Roz McCall MSP has called for more support for women who are suffering from endometriosis in Fife.
In Scotland, there are over 100,000 women with endometriosis, and on average it takes 8.5 years to get a diagnosis, which is a waiting time that must drop rapidly according to Endometriosis UK.
Ms McCall has had a long history of supporting women’s health causes. the issues, and supported campaigns by local sufferers of Endometriosis to see improvements to the gynaecology ward at Victoria Hospital.
30% of those who suffer from endometriosis said that it limited their daily activity, however, according to reports many women do not receive diagnosis as it is just seen as ‘terrible period pains’. Furthermore, 15% of sufferers said it made them take work off regularly due to the pain caused.
There have been calls from Endometriosis UK to cut diagnosis times in Scotland, and to help women who suffer from Endometriosis. They say we need to bust the myths and authorities need to take it more seriously.
Ms McCall will continue to support women’s health across Mid-Scotland and Fife, and is pushing the Scottish Government to do more on endometriosis diagnosis.
Roz McCall MSP, (Mid-Scotland and Fife) said:
“Thank you to Endometriosis UK for running the awareness month, too many women suffer from endometriosis, and it is important we raise awareness.
“Too many times women are told that they are just having bad period pains, but endometriosis is a serious condition which affects women.
“Women across Scotland have to deal with terrible pains for years, which in some cases leads to depression.
“In Fife, gynaecology patients had to receive treatment next to a maternity ward which was only separated by a curtain. I am glad that there has been £400,000 to improve the treatment of women. I will be keeping up to date with the project.
“The waiting times for diagnosis are horrific. I support the calls by Endometriosis UK to drastically cut waiting times.
“The Scottish Government must do more to support those suffering from endometriosis.”
